Married teacher found partially naked in car with 17-year-old student avoids jail thanks to plea deal (but she can teach again in three years)

A married teacher, who was caught partially naked with a 17-year-old student, has pleaded guilty to the charges and escaped jail, it emerged today.

Carrie Shafer, 39, a former biology teacher at duPont Manual High School, Kentucky, must instead serve three years of supervised probation after agreeing to a plea deal designed to get the case done and dusted quickly.

Legally she can teach again after her probation is up, but will be a convicted felon and is unlikely to be accepted by any school district, Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Jon Heck said after the hearing.

Looking fresh-faced and still wearing her wedding bands, the blonde mother-of-two entered her plea in a quiet yet determined voice at theJefferson Circuit Court today.

She admitted taking the teen, who has not been named, to William F Miles Park, in Jefferson County on March 11 and giving him alcohol.

An arrest report revealed Shafer was found in a compromising position with the student from her school in Louisville.

Police said the windows of the car were 'steamed up' and both occupants were partially clothed. They also found evidence of sex between the pair outside the car, including condoms.

The age of consent in Kentucky is 16 but a relatively new law in the state bans teachers or anyone in a position of trust from having sex with those under 18.

Circuit Judge Mitch Perry, ordered Shafer to pay $1,000 fine, continue to get counselling, and banned her from drinking alcohol.

Shafer didn't say anything to waiting reporters and neither did her attorney.

The teenager and his family were not in court and had been looking for a 'quick and just resolution,' Heck told The Courier-Journal.

He also told the paper there had been 'sexual contact' between the pair, but wouldn't be more specific about what actually went on in March or whether they had been in a relationship.

Shafer resigned from the Manual school, where she had taught since 2007, after she was arrested.

The case left staff and students stunned.

Student Kyle Peterson said he heard the news from another teacher who was visibly upset: 'A science teacher came in and told the class about her resignation and he was almost in tears because he felt bad for her.

'She's a good person at heart and you can really tell that in her classes. And she cares about her students.'

Shafer, this week, joins two other female teachers charged in sex cases with high school students.

Amy Caudle, a teacher at Andalusia Middle School, Alabama, was sentenced to 15 years for sexually abusing three students.

Chief assistant district attorney Grace Jeter had told the court that between November 2010 and February 2011 that Caudle performed oral sex on two pupils in her car.

She will serve three years, with credit for time already served and will have 12 years of supervised probation.

In South Carolina, a 23-year-old Spanish teacher resigned from her job on Tuesday after she was charged with sexual battery with a student.

Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright said his office received a complaint about an inappropriate relationship between a 16-year-old Boiling Springs high school student and teacher Abby McElhenny.

Woolf is alleged to have slept with both boys after they repeatedly asked for sex. She is also thought to have performed oral sex on both.

Felecia Killings, 27, an English teacher at Rodriguez High School in Fairfield, California was arrested in November on allegations of having sex with a 16-year-old student.

Police believe the alleged relations took place at Killings' home.

Gina Watring, 40, was jailed for five years last September after admitting having sex with a boy, 10, at the primary school in Durham, North Carolina. The mother-of-two had faced up to 70 years after being charged with dozens of offences.

A woman and two boys have been taken to hospital after a shooting in a Denver high school parking lot.

Denver Police confirmed the incident at Manual High School on Thursday afternoon but no other information has been released.

It is not clear who was inside the school at the time. Students had the day off because of the holiday.

The woman and boys were inside a white vehicle in the parking lot when two men approached them on foot and opened fire.

After firing several rounds, they fled on foot and have not been found since.

The woman was shot in the leg, one of the boys was shot in the arm and the other boy was shot multiple times.

Police have not revealed the victims' ages but the boys are said to be juveniles.

It is not clear yet how serious their injuries are, how old they are or even how they knew each other.

Police have still not been able to determine whether they knew the two gunmen.

The only description given of them so far is that one was wearing a white hoodie and the other was wearing a green and white shirt.

Police say they took off eastbound on foot after the shooting.

While the men remain at large, police say they do not believe there is any further threat to the area.

No students were inside the school at the time. The school operates community programs including a YMCA chapter but it remains unclear what the woman and boys were doing inside the car at the time.

At a brief press conference at the school, Denver Police's John White said detectives were still grappling with scene to recover more information.

They have not yet had a chance to interview the three victims.

'It's feasible to believe because they were in the car together that they were friends or relatives but I don't know,' he said of them.

A pick-up truck which belonged to printing company Wrapped With Envy was left abandoned in the middle of the parking lot.

The company's owner was not involved but his brother witnessed the shooting.

Denver Police confirmed the shooting on Twitter but gave no additional information
