The Ultimate DIOS MIOS Tutorial (Newbies check here before posting!)

Hi! Welcome to my tutorial on DIOS MIOS. DIOS MIOS is a modification to your Wii's system software that allows you to back up and play Gamecube games on your Wii from either a hard drive or an SD card. Lately, however, there has been a lot of posts about people having trouble getting DIOS MIOS to work. Some of the problems are due to hardware such as an incompatible HDD while other people have been following simply bad tutorials. I'm hoping to put an end to that. My goal is not only to make an easy to understand tutorial, but also a tutorial that teaches you why you do certain things, and what this and that means. That being said, this tutorial will be heavily based on ModMii, which is a great learning tool which may lead you to do bigger and better things in the modding community. I have added a downloads list at the bottom in addition to the links inside the tutorial as well. If there are any questions you may have feel free to PM me or leave a comment.

  • 2GB Wii SD Card

  • USB HDD for backups. (Or SD if you are going that route). To save you time, here's the HDD I use

  • Nintendo Wii capable of playing gamecube games.

  • Gamecube controller/Memory card

  • Homebrew Channel

Lets begin!

If you already have ModMii, skip to section one. If not, read on.

Go to ModMii's website and download XFlak's ModMii Installer. Run the installer and save it to wherever is convenient for you. Easy.

Now that you have the ModMii skin opened, open up ModMii classic. It is the very last option on screen. You should see a screen like this. Agree and enter the application. After Modmii checks for updates, you'll be at the ModMii main menu. Take a minute and read through all of the options and get an idea of what everything does. Don't click yet, just read. See? It's not as scary as it looks.

The first thing we're going to get is Syscheck. What Syscheck does is it runs and checks all of the files on your wii and finds out what essential cIOS (custom IOS) you may be missing. DIOS MIOS is very picky, so the best way to make sure we've got everything we need is to let syscheck do it's job. To get syscheck, press '2' on the ModMii main menu and then press Enter. You'll now be at the Downloads part 2 page. Syscheck is labeled SC, so we're going to type 'SC' then click enter. Now type 'D' and enter. It will ask if you want to begin downloading, press 'Y' and begin. After the download has completed, press 'O' and copy the contents to your SD card.

Pop your SD card into the wii and start up Homebrew Channel. Click the Syscheck application. Make sure you set it to 'All' and start the scan. It should only take a minute. After Syscheck is finished, exit to the main menu, take the SD card out of your wii and put it back into the computer. On your walk from the wii to the computer, make sure to mumble under your breath about how you don't have time to be constantly switching your SD in and out of the computer and that you 'should have just bought a gamecube.'

Run ModMii again, go to the menu and press 'SU' and Enter. On your SD card, you should have a file called sysCheck.csv. Drag and drop onto the ModMii screen and press enter. Type 'Y' to begin the download. ModMii will now download everything you need, AND generate your very own tutorial. Just copy the contents to your SD card and follow the tutorial after that. You won't be needing me for a while!

So you got your Wii up to date and your favorite copy of Mario Kart: Double Dash in your hand. That's great, but now we need something to play it on.

CFG, or Configurable USB Loader is the USB Loader we're going to be using for this guide. To get it, open up ModMii and type 'U' and enter. We're going to format to Fat32, so press '1', '1', and then 'USB'. (Type 'SD' if you're going to be using an SD instead of a hard drive.)

Plug in your hard drive and locate the drive letter. Type in your USB's Drive letter into ModMii and hit enter. It will begin downloading.

At this point, backup any files that came with your HDD, as you may need them later. You never know.

After the download, before copying the files, we have to format the hard drive. Go to your desktop and open 'FAT32 GUI Formatter'. Pick your drive letter, change allocation to 32768, and Quick Format. Once the format has finished, then you can copy the files to the USB.

There's one thing left to do in this section, and thats to get the CFG Loader Mod. Go to the google code page for the CFG Mod and download cfg70Mod65.dol. Rename this file to boot.dol. This file is going to replace the boot.dol in your existing cfg loader. On your USB go to apps -> USBLoader_cfg and replace the existing .dol file with the boot.dol we just downloaded and voila! That's the end of the USB Loader phase.

Almost done! Now we're going to get the actual DIOS MIOS files.

Custom mios installer 2.0

Files we're going to need.

  • DIOSMIOS_v2.10.wad (required for DM)

  • DMToolbox (Application that helps with ISO compression and format conversion)

  • BC-NUS-v6.wad (required for DM)

And if you don't have the latest d2x files:

  • cIOS249[56]-d2x-v10-beta53-alt.wad

  • cIOS250[57]-d2x-v10-beta53-alt.wad

Go to crediar's page and download the latest DM release. This will give you the first 2 on the list. (WARNING: For some people, Uploaded may try to get you to download via their own installer, UNCHECK THIS BOX. Download the file directly instead.) For the BC-NUS-v6, you can find it on downloads page 1 of modmii by pressing 'BC'. The d2x files can be found on downloads page 4 by pressing 'BETA', enter, '1', enter, '24956', enter, '25057', enter, 'd'

Put DMToolbox and all of its files on your computer, and transfer the .wad files to your SD card in a folder titled 'WAD'.

Put your SD back in the wii, and boot up any WAD Manager (MMM, WiiMod, etc.). First, install the d2x files. After those have been installed, install the DIOSMIOS_v2.10.wad and the RVL-BC-v6.wad. You're now ready to add games to your hard drive.

Open up DMToolbox. In the first box, click the folder icon and find your Gamecube ISO you want to convert. In the second box, make sure the the output is set to your /games folder on your HDD. Change the bubbles on the side to 'Optimized' and '32K'. It should look like this.

DIOS MIOS is picky about the way the game is placed into the games folder, so DMToolbox does that for you.

This is the correct way to store your games.

After this, you're done! Boot up CFG USB Loader and load your game. You should see a DIOS MIOS splash screen followed by your game! Hope this helped!

How do I rip gamecube games if I don't have access to a computer?

  • If you press (+) on your wiimote, CFG loader will install whatever game is currently in the disc drive.

Can I still play retail discs even though I have DIOS MIOS?

  • Yes! DM v2.10 is capable of playing retail discs.

What is the difference between DIOS MIOS and DIOS MIOS (Lite)?

  • DIOS MIOS is for backing up via USB while DM (Lite) is for SD cards.

Is (insert game) compatible with DIOS MIOS? Is (insert HDD) compatible?

  • Game compatibility list & HDD compatibility list

Can I use cheats with DIOS MIOS?

  • Yes! Ocarina is built in to most loaders.

I lost my Gamecube memory card. Can i still play the games?

Custom Mios Installer 2.0

  • Yes! Most USB loaders have a built in save feature called NMM which allows you to save without a memory card! Not every game works with NMM though!

What are SD card 'Speed Classes' and which class should I get?

  • Speed classes define how fast your SD card is. Basically, the higher the number, the faster the card. Learn more about speed classes here.

DIOS MIOS STILL ISNT READING MY HDD

  • Make sure your HDD is formatted to FAT32, 32kb cluster size, and that the partition is active, primary, and first. You can do this with EaseUS Partition Manager. You may also need to disable spindown.

I JUST GET A BLACK SCREEN(NO DIOS MIOS SPLASH SCREEN)

  • Chances are high that your USB2IDE device isn't supported.

Assure that your HDD is formatted with FAT32, no other FS is supported. Only cluster sizes 32KB or less are supported. Only 2TB drives or less are supported. The FAT32 partition MUST be the first primaly partition on the HDD, otherwise it will not work. If all the above are ok try another USB2IDE device or wait for an update.

I JUST GET A BLACK SCREEN AFTER THE DIOS MIOS SPLASH SCREEN

  • Before anything check the game issues wiki page.

If your game isn't listed you should try the following: Verify that your dump is ok, just google for the md5 hash. Try to install the game with DiscEX (without -c) Assure that the game isn't just waiting for the debugger Try to use a game version that matches your region Verify your loader settings and turn off things like NMM/Force-Prog, NMM/Force-Prog can cause black screens

IT TAKES LONG FOR THE DIOS MIOS SPLASH SCREEN TO SHOW UP

  • DIOS MIOS looks for an USB device on port 0 first and has code in place which waits for a device to become ready, only after (10seconds) it tries port 1.

Simply connect your device to port 0 instead.

I GET A GREEN SCREEN AFTER THE DIOS MIOS SPLASH SCREEN

  • This usually can have three reasons:

You have the debugger with waiting enabled The game just crashed (should get a crash dump via USBGecko if __fwrite patch was applied) The game tried to switch from one video mode to another, usually happens when loading USA games on EUR systems or vice versa.

I GET 'FATAL ERROR APP_MAIN:DST NOT IN MEM1!'

  • GCLoader got incorrect data when reading from the ISO

Verify that your HDD is using 32KB cluster size or less, this error can happen with 64KB cluster size. Verify that your dump is ok, just google for the md5 hash. Try to install the game again (delete the old folder before)

I GET 'FATAL ERROR APPLOADER SIZE IS ZERO!'

  • This means DM was unable to mount the selected ISO for whatever reason.

Verify that your dump is ok, just google for the md5 hash. Try to install the game again (delete the old folder before) Your loader is using an incorrect config version You installed DIOS MIOS and are trying to load a game from SD card You installed DIOS MIOS Lite and are trying to load a game from an USB device

I GET 'FATAL ERROR ENTRYPOINT IS NOT WITHIN MEM1!'

  • This means the apploader could not load the main.dol

Verify that your dump is ok, just google for the md5 hash. If you used GCReEX or DiscEX -c try DiscEX without -c to install the game as some games might break if you modify them Try to install the game again (delete the old folder before)

IM GETTING AUDIO LAG AND DELAYED CUTSCENES.

  • Check the DIOS MIOS compatibility list. DM isn't perfect, and certain games are doomed with audio lag.
